Shawn Machel Johnson East (born January 19, 1992) is an American artist gymnast. He was a gold medalist and Olympic Olympic team in 2008, an all-around silver medalist and floor. Johnson was also the winner of the five-time Pan American Games gold medal, winning team titles in 2007 and 2011, as well as titles in all-around, uneven bars, and balance beams in 2007.
Johnson became a member of the US senior team in 2007. He has one of the best rookie seasons ever recorded in gymnastics history, winning all matches in the American Cup, Pan American Games, US National Championships, and all World Championships. in his first year as a senior gymnast. He was the 2007 World Champion of 2007, the 2007 World Champion on the training floor, and a member of the gold medal team who won a US medal in 2007. As well as being the 2007 US Champion on balance and floor training, the 2008 US Champion on floor practice and silver medalist on the balance beam, he is a three-time US All-around champion, winning once as a junior and twice as a senior.
Johnson announced his retirement from gymnastics on June 3, 2012.
In May 2009, Johnson was the winner of the eight seasons of Dancing with the Stars, and in November 2012 he got second place in the all-star edition.

Initial and personal life
Johnson was born in Des Moines, Iowa, daughter of Doug and Teri Johnson. Her parents enrolled her in gym class at the age of three after they had seen her closet and jumped off the table. At the age of six, Johnson was one of Liang Chow's first students when he opened a gymnastics school in West Des Moines. He is a devout Christian.
Johnson attended the Valley High School. He is on a roll of honor, and likes to attend football matches, and dances. Throughout 2008, Johnson maintained a more balanced lifestyle than a typical elite female gymnast. He limits his gymnastics training to 25 hours per week, compared to 40 more typical hours.
Johnson left the public school in the spring of 2009. She and her mother moved to Los Angeles, California before appearing at Dancing With the Stars . In 2010, he completed a high school with a private teacher. He enrolled at Vanderbilt University in 2013, but resigned before the class began.
Johnson married Andrew East, a former long snapper for the Vanderbilt football team. They got engaged in July 2015 at Wrigley Field during the Chicago Cubs game and married on April 16, 2016, in Franklin, Tennessee. They live in Nashville, Tennessee.
In November 2015, he revealed that he suffered from eating disorders in 2008 in the 2008 Olympic lead. He admitted he only regularly eats about 700 calories per day - less than half of the recommended caloric intake for a 16-year-old girl.
In October 2017, he revealed via a YouTube video that he was pregnant but suffered a miscarriage.

When he was 12 years old, Johnson competed in the Junior Olympic National Championships (AS Level 10), finishing fourth in all-around, first on the beam, and second on the floor.
As a youth, Johnson was not fostered by USA Gymnastics, and his coach, Liang Chow, had no interaction with the national staff. In 2005, Chow contacted National Team Coordinator, Marta Karolyi, sending her Johnson video with the comment "I'm sure this boy will help the US team." Karolyi felt the action was brave, remarking, "Wow, the coach is pretty confident", but he immediately invites Johnson to the national team training camp.
Elite junior
Johnson qualified for Junior International Elite on his first attempt. He drew wide attention in the 2005 US Year, where he placed third. At the 2005 US National Championships, Johnson fell out of the spotlight on the first day of the competition and finished tenth.
In 2006, Johnson added several new skills, including Jaeger in the bar, and two top-difficulty skills (G), full-in back-out of the beam and double-twisting double back on the floor. He won the 2006 US National All-Around Championship with a score higher than his senior elite competitor.
Senior career
2007: Pre-World
Johnson became a senior in 2007 and continues to show new skills, including the twisting double layout of an uneven bar. He competed in the Tyson American Cup 2007, winning the entire team around Natasha Kelley. Johnson also competed at the Pan American Games in 2007, winning four gold medals (teams, all-arounds, beams and bars) and silver on the floor.
Johnson won the match at the US National Visa Championship in 2008., defeating Shayla Worley by more than three points. Johnson also finished more than five points ahead of two-time National Champion Nastia Liukin, in the first series of a series of matches over the next two years.
World Championships 2007
Johnson represented the US at the 2007 World Artist Gymnastics Championships along with Nastia Liukin, Shayla Worley, Alicia Sacramone, Ivana Hong, and Samantha Peszek.
In prelims (qualification), Johnson scored 16,250 on the beam, 15,150 on the floor, 15,175 on the vault, and (with falling on it) 14.625 on the bar. The US finished first in prelims and Johnson qualified for all-around, beam, and final floors.
Johnson did all four events in the team finals; the only US athlete to do this. Johnson scored 15,375 on bars and floors, and 15,150 in the vault. He fell on the beam in the handspring-handspring-layout series and scored 15.025. The team won gold by 184,400 points, 0.950 ahead of China's silver medal. It was the second US team gold in the World Championships.
In the all-around final, Johnson scored 15,175 in the vault, 15.375 on the bar, 15,900 on the beam and 15.425 on the floor. The total of 61,875 made him the fourth American woman to win an all-around gold medal.
During the final event, Johnson first competed on the balance beam, where he fell in full standing position and in his team move move, scored 14.475 and finishing last. In practice on the floor, he went out-of-limit in the first pass fall, but won gold by 15.250, just eclipsing the Sacramone team.
2008: pre-Olympics
Johnson competed again in the American Cup on March 1, 2008 at Madison Square Garden. He falls in his Amanar safe, scoring 15,175. He stated that his attempt to "stick" the vault caused the fall. In other tools, he scored 15,625 on beams, 16,325 on beams, and 15,975 on the floor. The US won the junior and senior all-around teams. Johnson won an all-around with 61.7, earning the highest score in safes (15.2), beam (16.2), and floor (15.0). Johnson finished first on the floor, despite falling, in his double doubles.
On June 7, 2008, Johnson won the US Visa Championship in 2008. Johnson scored 127.5, winning an all-around title with one point ahead of Liukin. Johnson also won the practice on the floor.
Two weeks later, Johnson won an all-around at the Olympic Trials in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, again finishing ahead of Liukin. Due to their top placement, Johnson and Liukin were named to the 2008 US Olympic gymnastics team immediately after the Trials. Four other team members in 2008 gained their place after two additional selection camps.
2008 Summer Olympics
At the 2008 Summer Olympics, Johnson competed in all four events during a team competition, in which the United States won a silver medal. Johnson also won a silver medal in an individual all-around competition, receiving a score of 62,725. Johnson's teammate and Olympic Village roommate Nastia Liukin won the gold medal, receiving a score of 63.325. With Liukin taking gold and Johnson silver, this competition is the first time the US Gymnastics team takes gold and silver medals in individual competitions; The competition also marks the fourth time a country has won a gold and silver medal in the individual competition around.
He won a silver medal on the practice floor, with teammate Liukin taking bronze. He won a gold medal in a tool of balance beam. Like all versatile individuals, he and Liukin take the top two medals in the event. He qualifies as a second reserve to an uneven end bar, but does not compete.
Comeback
In January 2010, Johnson tore his ACL while skiing. He underwent reconstructive knee surgery the following week.
In May 2010, Johnson announced his return to gymnastics training with the goal of making the 2012 US Olympic team.
In August 2010, Johnson informed him that his knee was recovered to allow for full training and that he had learned a difficult new skill.

In November 2010, Johnson entered the first post-Olympic national team training camp. Although, he hopes to return to the "farm" later in his comeback, based on the progress shown in his video, Marta Karolyi requested that she show up sooner. Johnson mentioned that his reconstructed knee still impeded a high volume of exercise.
In February 2011, Johnson became an official member of the US National Senior team once again allowing him to compete in international competitions. He stated that he wants to return to the competition in 2011 later.
In September 2011 Johnson was given the non-alternate name of traveling to the 2011 Women's World Women's Championship Team.
In October 2011 Johnson was appointed to the 2011 Pan American Games Team. He won a gold medal in team competitions and also a silver medal for his performances in uneven bars.
Retirement
On June 3, 2012, Johnson ended his comeback for the 2012 Olympic team and retired because the problem continued with his left knee.

Johnson is one of two women's athletes who appeared in the 100 most searched AOL women on the Internet for 2009, ranked 27th.
A scientific poll commissioned by Forbes magazine concluded that Johnson was "America's Most Favored Sportsman" in 2009.
Johnson was also at the top of the most exciting athlete on the Celebrity Metric E-score in 2010, and he was ranked seventh of Favorite Women's Favorite American Stars at Harris Interactive in 2010.
