Personal life
Engagement to Jacqueline Bouvier
The Husteds are listed on the Social List and are friends with Jacqueline Bouvier's father John Vernou Bouvier III and stepfather Hugh D. Auchincloss. Both Husted sisters also attended Miss Porter School with Bouvier. Husted and Bouvier began dating in 1951. Bouvier returned to New York City from Washington, D.C to see Husted, staying at his dad's apartment during the courtship. The couple were engaged in December 1951. Their plans for the June wedding were announced in the New York Times on January 21, 1952. Mother Bouvier Janet was initially pleased that the two began dating but soon became worried that Husted did not make enough money for supporting his daughter and family despite the fact that he is a stockbroker earning $ 17,000 per year (about $ 157,000 in 2017 dollars). Bouvier also has reservations about marrying Husted because they have little in common and he realizes his feelings for him are not genuine. Bouvier reportedly told his friends that Husted was "immature and boring" and his work was too tame. Bouvier broke off his engagement in March 1952. When he was engaged to Husted, Bouvier met with Congressman John F. Kennedy. They began dating in January 1953 and married on 12 September 1953.
Marriage and children
Raped then divorced married Ann Frowert Hagerty, former Mrs. John Sherrard Brittain III, on July 21, 1954, in New York City. They have two children, Pamela and John. He died on August 16, 1971. He remarried on June 6, 1972, in London, England, to Mrs. Elizabeth Keeling, twin daughters Major General Sir John Hanbury-Williams and Lady Hanbury-Williams.
Next year
After retiring in 1982, Husted moved to Nantucket, Massachusetts where he was active in the community and served on the board of The Nantucket Cottage Hospital. He died on May 9, 1999 after a sudden illness. Husted survived his wife, Elizabeth, daughter Pamela, son of John, brother Anne, brother William, two stepchildren and seven grandchildren.
