Hill Valley is a fictitious city in California as indicated by a clock that serves as a trilogy setting Back to the Future and animated spin-off series. In the trilogy, Hill Valley is seen in four different time periods (1885, 1955, 1985 and 2015) as well as in alternative dystopian alternatives 1985. These films contain many jokes, verbal alluses and detailed set design elements, from which detail and history are consistent of the area can be lowered.

The name "Hill Valley" is a joke, being an oxymoron. However, the earliest manuscript for Back to the Future Part II mentions that Valley Hill was named after its founder, William "Bill" Hill.

The facade design of the courthouse and Clock Tower is based on the real-life Limestone County Courthouse in Athens, Alabama.

Produksi

To Return to the Future , the producers considered filming the town square scene in the real town of Petaluma, California, but soon realized it would be very costly and impractical to change the real place to match different era.. Instead they filmed it in the Universal Studios backlot, where they had more control. The main location, once called Mockingbird Square after the 1962 film To Kill a Mockingbird but now known as Courthouse Square, has been used for many movies and television shows. One notable example is the first episode of the sci-fi The Twilight Zone series, called "Where Is Everybody?" in 1959. The Valley Valley Court can also be found in the movies Bruce Omnipotent , Gremlins , Bye Bye Birdie , Shoes Sneaker i>, The Offspring music video "Why Do not You Get a Job?", an episode of Major Dad entitled "Who's That Blonde" and even in the episode of Buffy The Vampire Slayer The clock tower itself is a moveable addition, one of the many ways in which the Courthouse building has been improved over the years to meet production needs.

Many cars that appear in the 2015 scene are modified for a movie or concept car. Examples include Ford Probe, Saab EV-1, CitroÃÆ'¡n DS 21, Pontiac Banshee Concept, Pontiac Fiero, and Volkswagen Beetle. Cars reused from other science fiction films include "Star Car" from The Last Starfighter (1984) and "Spinner" from Blade Runner (1982). Griff's car is a modified BMW convertible.

To Back to the Future Part III , Hill Valley 1885 was filmed in Sonora, California. The producers can use the leased land as long as they leave the buildings there. They agreed to leave everything except the Clock Tower. Interestingly, on August 10, 1996, lightning struck the city and caught fire. The burning fire in the Universal Studios Hollywood backlot on November 6, 1990, had previously destroyed many Courthouse Courts, an arrangement in which all other time periods were filmed. However, the courthouse itself survived the devastation. Another backlot fire on September 6, 1997. again damaged Courthouse Square. In both cases, the backlot facade was then rebuilt. Sonora's location is not rebuilt. In addition, a fire was February 14, 1999 in Whittier High School, California, where some scenes (mostly exteriors) were filmed, destroying the men's gym there. On June 1, 2008, another fire destroyed part of the rebuilt Courthouse Square backlot and damaged the clock tower.

Real-life location

Other real-life shooting locations in Hill Valley landmarks include:

  • Doc's house in 1955 was the Gamble House in Pasadena, California. The Doc's garage in 1985 was a façade built next to Burger King on North Victory Boulevard in Burbank, California.
  • The Twin Pines/Lone Pine Mall is actually the Puente Hills Mall in Industry, California.
  • The home of Marty Lyon Estates in 1985 was actually on Roslyndale Avenue in Arleta, California.
  • Field 1955 Lyon Estates is actually along farmland between the borders of Chino, California, and Corona, California.
  • Twin Pines Ranch Peabody is actually at Golden Oak Ranch, owned by The Walt Disney Company and used in many Disney productions.
  • The houses of George McFly, Lorraine Baines, and Biff Tannen in 1955 are all located in South Pasadena, California.
  • The train that crashed into De Lorean and the Futuristic Railway was parked in Port Hueneme, California.
  • John F. Kennedy Drive is actually a Victory Boulevard in Burbank, California.
  • The River Road Tunnel is actually the Observatory Tunnel at Griffith Park in Los Angeles. The actual tunnel is only a fraction of the length described in Part II.
  • The Pohatchee Drive-In Theater where Marty originally traveled from 1955 to 1885 was not a real theater. It was built full-scale for the third movie in Monument Valley, Utah (near the Arizona/Utah border) and was demolished after the movie part was completed.

Fiction history

The following information is taken directly from places and events indicated or mentioned in three movies:

Initial completion

The town of Lembah Hill is described as the first settled in 1850 and incorporated in 1865. In the 1880s, the city was connected by a railroad to San Francisco. The construction of a new courthouse was under way in 1885, setting Back to Future Part III , where the new clock is dedicated to the building. The Shonash Ravine bridge was completed in the summer of 1886, around the same time the chasm was renamed Clayton Ravine to commemorate Clara Clayton, a schoolteacher who had died of falling into the abyss. However, in the revised time line in which Doc Brown saved Clara's life, the town named it Eastwood Ravine after Marty McFly's persona.

City Square

In 1955, as seen in the first two films Back to the Future, the area around the courthouse has evolved into Hill Valley town center. In front of the courthouse is a grassy town square, with shops, two cinemas (Essex and Town), and cafes in the surrounding streets. An important moment in the history of city fiction occurred on Saturday, November 12, 1955, at 10:04 pm. PST, when lightning struck the courthouse clock tower, freeze the clock at 10:04. The clock was never fixed and became a local landmark, left in a non-functional state on the orders of the Hill Valley Preservation Society. A piece of broken ledge from Doc Brown's successful attempt to channel lightning from the clock tower was also never repaired, as can be seen when Marty returned to 1985 and in 2015, but not at Alternate 1985.

In Marty's original timeline, many of the city's square businesses had moved or closed in 1985. New businesses that replaced them included thrift stores, yoga studios, and adult bookstores. The Essex film theater now features pornographic films while the City Theater is used for church services, and the courthouse is in disrepair, and at night at least one homeless person (called "Red" by Marty) sleeps in the city square square park bench. The grassy garden outside the courthouse has been converted into a parking lot. "It's always one of the main elements of this story even in its early incarnations," screenwriter Bob Gale says in Making Back to the Future , "is to take the place and show what happened during the period of thirty What happens to everyone's hometown is obviously the same thing. They built malls inside boonies, and killed all business centers, and everything changed. "

In the 21st century, the downtown area experienced a resurgence when the courthouse had been turned into a Courthouse Mall. Businesses have started moving back to and around the town square and the parking lot has been replaced by a pool. The clock on the courthouse is still maintained at 10:04, and the mall logo is an illustration of the lightning flashes that snatched the clock tower. The City Theater/Assembly of Christ House has been transformed into an art museum with murals painted on the front side of the building above the tent.

Signs that say "Welcome to Hill Valley" were spotted in 1955, 1985 and 2015. Both the signs of 1955 and 2015 have symbols representing Rotary clubs, Kiwanis and Lions. In addition, the 1955 mark has the YMCA logo, Jaycees, and Future Farmers of America, while the 2015 mark has the logo of the Environmental Crime Security Team and the 4-H Club Ants logo. The "Welcome to Valley Hill" sign in 1985 did not contain any signage representing any club and named Mayor Goldie Wilson. In 1985 Marty's alternative was seen walking above the mark, which had been torn down and 'E' had spray painted on 'I' on HILL VALLEY making the name HELL VALLEY. did not display the name of the mayor but the words "A Nice Place to Live" as also seen in 1955.

Alternate history

In Back to the Future Part II , an alternative version of the cloudy Night Valley is destroyed, depicted complete with partial history. Due to Biff Tannen's strong and corrupt influence, gambling was legalized in 1979. Tannen's waste reclamation plant mine was built in the city center, polluting the air and leading to a pollution warning to be issued. All local businesses in the city center are closed or relocated and replaced with strip clubs, pornographic theaters, and brothels. Tannen also bought the police. As a result, crime increased and motorcycle gangs settled in the city. Hill Valley public schools were burned and the courthouse converted into Biff Tannen's Pleasure Paradise Roadhouse. The clock in the courthouse still remains at 10:04 although although the damage Doc did to the tower platform in 1955, for whatever reason, now seems to have disappeared. Biff also killed George McFly (Marty's father) in 1973 so he could marry the wife of George Lorraine (Marty's mother) to make him a corrupt family man and city ruler.

According to the original texts for Back to the Future Part II a partial view of the 2015 alternative should also be described. Currently Biff now has half the state of California with its influence after obtaining his son, Biff Jr., the governor's seat and they uphold their power and corruption with a large and powerful cyborg police force.

Back to the Future: The Game alternate history

Another timeline, bifurcated from the Back to the Future: The Game , saw Irving Kid Tannen, father of Biff Tannen and mafioso era ban, avoiding his long arrest for illegal consumption and sale of alcohol. Thus, in 1986 Biff Tannen had two brothers, and the Tannen family was a recognized criminal family, ruling over the Valley of the Hills with an iron grip.

In another alternative history, still branched from Back to the Future: The Game, a teenager Emmett Brown, in 1931, fell in love with young journalist Edna Strickland: as a result he married Emmett, convincing him to pursuing sociological and political goals. He succeeded in winning it by making him interested in science, but in a way that his scientific skills could be used to control people rather than using science to understand the mystery and for the progress of mankind. Thus, under the influence of "Citizen Brown" in 1985 Hill Valley was a technological dystopia, where Emmett Brown oversaw the fascist regime, controlling every activity of its citizens, routinely brainwashing and spying. In this new Hill Valley, in their usual reversal of roles, Marty McFly is square, serious and dedicated to Emmett Brown for a mistake (because the original McFly is "disappointed" to find) and Jennifer is a rebel rocker, a child wild with an unexpected streak. In addition, Lorraine was again a sad woman who was fat and drunk, George had returned to being a loser. He was at the beginning of the first time line (although his oppressor was a great government, not Biff). Biff Tannen is now one part of the Citizen Plus program, brainwashed into obedience. Hill Valley now appears as an advanced technological marvel, owned by Emmett Brown that is now rich and powerful, even with the iconic City Hall replaced by a large panel with the E. Symbol Brown Industries . As an additional note, because in this timeline Emmett Brown has never developed time travel technology, so events from the original series never happened, Eastwood Ravine is still known as Clayton Ravine, someone saved Clara from her death.

The last attempt to repair the damage involved with the Back to the Future: The Game event ended with an even more radical change, with Edna Strickland traveling under a pseudonym in 1876 to act as a moral guide. The newly established Valley Valley: however, after a failed confrontation with Beauregard Tannen, a Confederate soldier who built and founded the Saloon Palace, he accidentally caused a fire that depleted Hill Valley, turning him into a ghost town with himself as the only inhabitant. Again, Marty and Doc manage to restore continuity, which is now but a minor change of sport (Arthur and Silvia, Marty's grandparents, preparing for their marriage to 1931 (it was 1936 in the original timeline), Doc Brown spent more time in 1986 and less traveled through time, Kid Tannen is now reformed, married to Edna Strickland and has a better influence over Biff).

Places

Many family businesses are passed down from generation to generation in Hill Valley. As a result, the city changes but remains the same from one generation to the next, as business is updated but rarely changes. These repetitive elements are the deliberate choice of the filmmaker. Production Designer Back to the Future Part II , Rick Carter, quoted on an extra DVD says, "The future is built at the moment." Director Robert Zemeckis adds that the continuity between different eras in Hill Hill's history is an example of the saying, "the more things change, the more they stay the same".

Here is a list of places like that. When a place is not visible or mentioned in the movie, it is marked unknown . Some of the buildings shown in the 1885 scene actually lie farther down the road in areas not shown in the first two films.

Twin Pines Mall (Lone Pine Mall)

Twin Pines Mall is the name of a shopping center located outside Hill Valley, where Doctor Emmett Brown first tested his time machine, making his dog Einstein the world's first time explorer. (The site where the mall was filmed for the movie is actually Puente Hills Mall, located in City of Industry, California. The location of J.C. Penney seen in the movie has been closed, and is now occupied by a 24-hour fitness center.)

When Marty McFly returned from 1955 to 1985, the mall could be seen renamed Lone Pine Mall when it arrived in 1955 and crashed into the Old Man Peabody barn at Twin Pines Ranch , named for two precious baby pines Peabody. Marty was shot by Peabody, forcing Marty to flee at DeLorean, and accidentally crushing and destroying one of the twin pines.
