Cat polydactyl is a cat with an innate physical anomaly called polydactyly (or polydactylism, also known as hyperdactyly), which causes a cat to be born with more than usual number of toes on one or more of its claws. Cats with genetically derived properties are most commonly found along the East Coast of North America (in the United States and Canada) and in South West England and Wales.

True polydactyly is a congenital aberration, inherited genetically as the autosomal dominant trait of the cis element of ZRS from the Pd gene with incomplete penetration.
The normal cat has a total of 18 toes, with five fingers on each front foot, and four fingers on each hind leg; Polydactyl cats may have as many as eight digits in front of them and/or rear paws. Both Jake, the Canadian polydactyl cat, and Paws, the American polydactyl cat, are recognized by Guinness World Records as having the highest number of toes on a cat, 28. Combinations anywhere from four to seven toes per claw are common. Polydactyly most commonly found in front paws alone, it is rare for cats to have only polydactyl claws, and polydactyly of all four claws are even less common.
Radial Hipoplasia Feline (see flattened) is a mimic of polydactyly and is considered a severe condition. Radial hypoplasia can lead to the formation of extra jointed fingers, but is not the result of genes typically associated with polydactyls. Thus it does not cause the condition of "cat cat" or "cat's thumb" where extra toes occur apart from normal dew, usually attributed to an additional pad that makes them look like less developed legs sticking up near the base of the toe normal. In contrast, additional toes associated with hypoplasia are directly related to the normal toes, giving the cat too much, the feet flat - the colloquial language known as the "patty foot" or "hamburger leg". Although this looks less serious than the true polydactyly (because the legs look "normal" in addition to having one or two extra toes), breeding the cat will ultimately produce highly defective offspring.

History and folklore
This condition appears to be most commonly found in cats along the East Coast of North America (in the United States and Canada) and in South West England, Wales and Kingston-upon-Hull. Polydactyl cat has been very popular as a ship cat. Although there is some controversy over whether the most common variant of that trait originates as a mutation in New England or brought there from Britain, there appears to be agreement that it is widely spread as a result of cats carried by ships originating in Boston, Massachusetts. , and the prevalence of polydactyly among cat populations from various ports is correlated with the date when they first traded with Boston. Contributing to the spread of polydactyl cats in this way, sailors have long been known to appreciate polydactyl cats primarily to climb and hunt for their remarkable abilities as aids in rodent control. Some sailors think they bring good luck at sea. The scarcity of polydactyl cats in Europe is probably because they were hunted and killed because of the superstition of witchcraft.
The genetic work of studying the DNA base of the conditions suggests that many different mutations may cause polydactyly.
The Nobel laureate, Ernest Hemingway, is a famous polydactyl cat lover, having first been given a six foot cat by a boat captain. After Hemingway's death in 1961, his former home in Key West, Florida became a museum and home for his cats, and today it houses about fifty cat offspring (about half of which are polydactyl). Because of his love for these animals, the polydactyl cats are sometimes referred to as "Hemingway cats".
Naming
Nicknamed cat polydactyl include Hemingway cats , cat mitten , cat conch , boxing cat - cat legs , snowshoe cats , cat thumb , six finger cats , and Cardi-cats >. Two specific breeds known by some fancier paint clubs are American Polydactyl and Maine Coon Polydactyl.
Breeding
American Polydactyl cat is bred as a certain type of cat, with special physical and behavioral characteristics in addition to additional digits.
The American Polydactyl is not to be confused with the Maine Coon polydactyl pedigree. The polydactyl form of Maine Coon is being restored by several breeders.
Genetics
In the case of a polydactyly preaksial Maine Coon cat (Hemingway mutant) a mutation of the cis-regulatory element ZRS (ZPA regulator sequence) is attributed. ZRS is a noncoding element, 800,000 basepairs away to the target Shh gene. The ectopic expressions of Shh are seen on the anterior side of the extremities. Usually Shh is expressed in the organizer region, called the polarization activity zone (ZPA) on the posterior side of the extremity. From there it diffuses anteriorly, laterally toward the growth of the extremities. In the mutant mirroring of smaller ectopic expression in the new organizer region is seen on the posterior side of the extremity. This ectopic expression causes cell proliferation to produce raw materials for one or more new digits.
