Aimed at by lyricist Hal David to convey a woman's attention to her husband serving in the Vietnam War, "I Say a Little Prayer" was recorded by Dionne Warwick on April 9, 1966. Although Bacharach's recording with Warwick usually takes no more than three times (often just take one), Bacharach performs ten times on "I Say a Little Prayer" and still does not like the finished song, feels it's in a hurry.

The song was never released until September 1967 when it was introduced on the album of Windows of the World and it was the owner of Scepter Records Florence Greenberg than Bacharach who wanted "I Say a Little Prayer" added to the album. When a disc jockey from the United States began playing an album song in October 1967, significant air play caused Scepter Records to release the song as a single supported with a newly recorded song "(Theme of) Valley of the Dolls". The speedy sound of "I Say a Little Prayer" Bacharach disliked proved to be the best-selling hit for Warwick with "I Say a Little Prayer" reaching # 4 in December on Billboard Hot 100 and also # 8 on Billboard R & amp; B Chart and # 4 on Canadian Charts. "(Theme of) Valley of the Dolls", the B-side will be another hit for Warwick reaching # 2 in February 1968 on Billboard Hot 100 and # 1 on the Record World Chart: a single "I Say a Little Prayer" Warwick will receive gold certification from the RIAA for the sale of one million units in January 1968.

"I Say a Little Prayer" b/w "(Theme of) Valley of the Dolls", became one of the most successful two-sided hits of the Rock era. Like some Bacharach compositions, both sides contain sections written with unusual timings. The verses of "Prayer" are built from 2 consecutive sizes 4/4, size 10/4 (using 4/4 2/4 4/4), and 2 last sizes 4/4. The choir was at 11/4 (using 4/4 3/4 4/4), played by session drummer Gary Chester.

The song was reused in the 2010 revival Promise, Promise .
