Dolphin Tale is an American 3D family drama 2011 directed by Charles Martin Smith (first since 2008), from a screenplay by Karen Janszen and Noam Dromi and a book of the same name. Winter lost its tail after being tangled with a rope tied to a crab trap, and paired with a prosthetic strap. The film was released on September 23, 2011 by Warner Bros. Pictures; Dolphin Tale received positive reviews from critics and earned $ 95.9 million on a $ 37 million budget. A sequel, Dolphin Tale 2 , was released on September 12, 2014.

Plot

Sawyer Nelson, an 11-year-old lonely boy, has been left behind in school since his father left five years earlier. Her only friend is her cousin, Kyle, a swimmer who hopes to compete in the Olympics. Kyle went to spend time in the army.

One day on the way to summer school, Sawyer found a fisherman trying to help the wounded dolphins get trapped in a crab trap. Dolphins were taken for treatment to the Clearwater Marine Aquarium (CMA), run by Doctor Clay Haskett. Clay's daughter, Hazel, named the Winter dolphins, after the two previous dolphins, Summer and Autumn, have been treated successfully and returned to the ocean. Sawyer sneaks in to see Winter, and then begins visiting every day, being harassed by pelicans who live on the roof named Rufus. Their parents were initially hesitant (Clay since Sawyer had no experience with marine animals, and Sawyer's mother, Lorraine, because Sawyer spent the summer school unlicensed), but they realized that the friendship seemed to benefit Winter and Sawyer. Clay allowed the visit to continue, and Lorraine pulled Sawyer from summer school and let him volunteer at the CMA, and gave him a new wetsuit.

However, Winter's tail was damaged and had to be amputated. Winter learns to swim without a tail by developing a side-to-side movement like a fish, but after X-ray, Clay realizes that the unnatural movement causes unnatural pressure on his spine, which if it continues to paralyze and eventually kill him.

News came that Kyle had been injured in the explosion and returned home for treatment. Sawyer was glad to see him, but was crushed when Kyle, depressed, missed his own party and stayed at the local Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center, where Doctor Cameron McCarthy developed a prosthetic limb. Sawyer and his mother visit Kyle there, but Sawyer is humiliated when Kyle asks them to leave. Not wanting to upset Sawyer, Kyle took Sawyer for a walk and explained the situation and he needed time. Sawyer then asked Dr. McCarthy if he can make a prosthetic tail for Winter. McCarthy agreed to do so and convinced his prosthetic supplier, Hanger Prosthetics and Orthotics, to supply parts at no cost. Dr. McCarthy produces a "homemade" tail model while waiting for the real to arrive, but Winter rejects it by banging it against the pool wall. Meanwhile, Kyle becomes more depressed when his friend and friend swimming, Donovan Peck, beat Kyle's old pool record. McCarthy persuaded Kyle to go home.

Then CMH, already in financial danger, was damaged by a storm. The board of directors agrees to cover and sell the land to real estate developers, and find homes for all animals except for Winter; because her condition is not desirable, and may have to be punished. Kyle visits CMH and sees that Winter is like him, with broken limbs. However, inspired by a girl with a fake limb from Atlanta, Georgia, who came to visit Winter, Sawyer imagined holding a "Save Winter Day" to save the facility. Clay was not sure, but he reconsidered after talking to his father, Reed. Kyle agreed to race Donovan Peck and persuade Bay News 9 to cover the event.

The tail provided by Hanger finally arrived; However, Winter also rejected it. Sawyer then realizes what the real problem is: the plastic base for his tail irritates his skin. Therefore, McCarthy developed an alternative gel-shaped sock that he called "Winter Gel" (which is the original name of the Hanger product used to embed the prosthetic limbs, developed during the Winter study). Winter receives this new prosthetic tail.

On Winter Day Diving, work with Winter impresses everyone. Guru Sawyer gave her a school credit, allowing her to graduate from summer school. Fishermen who found Winter on the beach also came. Real estate developers decide to keep CMH open and support it financially. With the help of Winter, Kyle then won a swimming race against Donovan.

The final section shows documentary footage from Winter's actual rescue, some Winter prosthetics, and a real amputee scene visiting Winter at the Clearwater Marine Aquarium.

The difference between a movie and a real show

In the film, Winter washed up on Honeymoon Island Beach in Dunedin near Clearwater. He was found by a nearby fisherman sitting on the beach (and later rescued with the help of Sawyer). In real life, Winter was found in Mosquito Lagoon in southern New Smyrna Beach-part of Cape Canaveral National Seashore. The fisherman found him in the lagoon as well. Winter was first brought to the local Marine Discovery center and then transferred to Clearwater, which is on the opposite side of the country.

In the film, Winter's tail was amputated due to an infection caused by being caught on a leash. In real life, the loss of the blood supply to the tail (from being caught in the rope) causes most of the tail to fall, with only a small piece amputated.

In the film, developing the Winter tail takes several weeks, with a Veterans Administration doctor working during his vacation. In real life, an appropriate tail development process requires several months of work by Kevin Carroll and Dan Strzempka of the Hanger Clinic.
