History

Miramar was founded by A.L. Mailman to serve as a "bedroom community" for nearby Miami and Fort Lauderdale. Mr. Mailman bought the original property that he will develop from H.D. Perry, Sr. in 1953. He built 56 houses on the property which is a cheap house of concrete and flat roof. These houses sell quickly because of the low cost of the house and land, and the town of Miramar appears.

The city was founded on May 26, 1955 and is named for the Cuban town outside Havana where Mailman has a summer home (Miramar translates to "Look at the Sea" in Spanish). At the time of the merger, the city had a population of less than two hundred. With approximately 2.9 square miles of land area, Miramar's original city limits are Southwest 64 Avenue to the east, University Drive to the west, Dade County line to the south, and Pembroke Road to the north. On June 20, 1955, the city's first mayor (Robert Gordon) and the sworn city council, all appointed by the governor and served until January 1959, at the time of the first city elections were held. The city seal bears the motto "Beauty and Progress".

Mr. H.D. Section Perry Sr. in Miramar did not stop selling the land to Mr. Mailman for development. He is recognized as one of the foremost pioneers in Miramar history. His character and civil activity not only affected the lives of the early inhabitants, but continued to this day, as evidenced by the schools and parks in the city that bear the name of his family. Many long-time residents like to remember the party events held by Mr and Mrs. Perry during his early years. The others thanked Mr. Perry for his livestock classes, which he did for the benefit of the young Miramar so they could learn something about farm life.

The only major road when Miramar was developed was the US 441 which was a two-lane road at the time, Hallandale Beach Boulevard to the Southwest 66 Terrace and Pembroke Road which is the dirt road to University Drive. There are no other transport routes that provide access to new communities. The early town fathers of Miramar advocated a planned and controlled growth philosophy. The city adopted the Comprehensive Land Use Plan in 1972 before cities and districts were mandated to do so. It provides a framework for future growth development on a regular basis. The lesser known fact is that the Miramar Residential City is one of the largest cities in the State of Florida. With 2/3 of the land undeveloped, the decision to guide and control urban growth remains a wise one.
