The Bishops boarded the Titanic ship in Cherbourg, France as a First Class passenger on April 10, 1912. On the evening of the 14th, the bishops were in their cabin when the Titanic ships hit an iceberg. Soon after, according to Bishop Dickinson, he went to the deck to investigate and then returned to the room after being told by the board that the ship was not in danger. Later, fellow passenger Albert Stewart assured the bishops about the danger, and they returned to the deck of the ship, leaving Freu Freu behind. Although there was no sense of urgency at the time, they were both told to board the Lifeboat # 7. In a newspaper interview, Helen Bishop stated that when they went to the deck, someone said the newly married couple should be put in a boat first and that there was three newlyweds on their boat. He served in the Army during the First World War. Bishop remained married to Sydney Boyce until his death in November 1950. After the war ended, he moved from Dowagiac and settled in Ottawa, Illinois where he died of a stroke on February 16, 1961.
