The Arrow Lakes in British Columbia, Canada, divided into Upper Arrow Lake and Lower Arrow Lake , is the widening of the Columbia River. The lakes are located between the Selkirk Mountains to the east and the Monashee Mountains to the west. Beachland is quite rare, and interspersed with rocky headlands and steep cliffs. The sides of the dense wooded mountains, and rose sharply to a height of about 2,600 meters.

Originally two lakes 14 miles apart, Lake Panah became one of the lakes along the 230 km due to a reservoir created by the 1960s construction of the Keenleyside dam; in the lower waters of both lakes remain different, connected to the fast moving parts known as the Narrows. Damming the Lower Arrow Lake resulted in water rising 12 meters above the natural level. As a result of higher water, the valley lost 2/3 of its fertile land. Thousands of people moved. The lake stretches from the north of Castlegar in the south to Revelstoke in the north. Another hydroelectric development, Whatshan Dam, bends the Whatshan Lake from the Whatshan River directly to Lake Arrow, just north of the Needles-Fauquier Ferry.

There are two freeways ferry across the Upper Arrow Lake: Upper Arrow Lakes Ferry between Shelter Bay and Galena Bay at the northern end of Upper Arrow Lake; and Needles Cable Ferry to the south, at BC Hwy 6 between Nakusp and Vernon. There is also Arrow Park Ferry, a cable ferry connecting East Arrow Park and West Arrow Park about 28 km south of Nakusp.

The Arrow Lakes are part of the traditional territorial claims of the Sinixt, Okanagan and Ktunaxa peoples, although at the time of contact and during colonization only Sinixt lived along its shores.

Nama asal Edit

The Arrow Lakes name, though widely used, is unofficial; the gazetted names are for Upper Arrow Lake and Lower Arrow Lake, and BC Hydro refers them together as Reservoir Arrow Lakes. The origin of the name is a cultural feature known as Arrow Rock on the east coast of Lower Arrow Lake, about 35 km upstream from Castlegar, opposite the Renata community, a large rock outcrop or overhang over the water, on a face that is a hole full of arrows. Different stories surround the meaning of arrows, said to be shot there by the Lake people (Sinixt) for luck, either before or after the war:

On October 19, 1826, while traveling south between Upper and Lower Arrow Lakes, Simpson passed "... The Arrow Rock, so named because of a round hole in full-face Arrows, is said to have been fired by Indians during the Bow and Arrow practice before the war journey. "(Emilius Simpson Journal, Accession HBC B223/a/3 Archive 1826 Folio 39D-41) Source: included with notes

"On our part up to Columbia to Boat Encampment, the Brigade has spells and smoke in this place, I remember those boats just below the high & straight stone walls, and arrows embedded in holes or basins of some 30 or 40 feet on top of us on the boat Mr. Duncan Finlayson asked me in chinook if I wanted an arrow I told him yes he took his gun and fired, brought some of them broken.] was taken by people and given to me but before doing it I remember they were examined closely..... being an old sailor and people from the Indian Arrows Experience, they were very interested in Endeavor to solve the question with what tribe or nation were the arrows made. They examined the type of wood, feather & amp; even denew, the number of rounds needed to secure the feathers, but the experts as they have to hand it over - they can not finish it premises n satisfactory. I remember there was something said about a big war party L ake Indians or Upper Columbia River Indians attacking Kutanays or Mountaneirs. They have defeated Mountaneir and have captured a large number of arrows & amp; not needing more of them to spend them in the holes to commemorate the action. I'm sure the place is in Lower Lake. I have made some questions about miners, boatmen and others, and it's strange to say none of them have ever seen... [arrow]. I then began to think that I was wrong, but questioned the head of Big Edward the head of Lake Indians. He told me there was such a place, but did not speak [his] language I could not get any more information. (Letter from Ranald Macdonald to Malcolm McLeod, December 29, 1890, held at the Provincial Archives [details of accession not quoted on BC business cards]) Source: included with notes

In the days before Columbus was born, the Indians in the west and east Kootenay were constantly experiencing disputes. It is customary for the western Kootenay Indians to winter along southern Columbia and to climb the river every summer, to the lake where the hunts are good. Since the tribes in Slocan were always wary of war, they took the scouts out to Arrow Lakes to record when their enemy came to the river. One summer, the spies returned from the [Arrows] Lake with the news that a very large army of soldiers was coming up into the river. So the Slocan tribes prepare for war and cross the mountains by force to Nakusp. When starting from their canoe at Nakusp (the bay behind the long dot) they see signs of a massive storm gone by. When climbing the lake for some distance, they find the enemy's strength. But, honey! No one held them back, because a massive storm apparently came suddenly up on them and there was nothing left but a pile of canoe and corpse debris. The Slocan Indians consider this a great help from the great 'Manatoo', and as a mark of respect, they fire all their arrows to the high rocks where they lie, and write inscriptions on the stone's face. Because of the great wealth of arrowheads that fell to the bottom of the lake that day, the Indians named it Arrow Lake. (Spoken by Richard Blyth, as was told to him by Head of Louis Joseph, Burton.)
