1111 Lincoln Road is a parking garage in the South Beach section of Miami Beach, Florida, designed by internationally renowned Swiss architectural firm, Herzog & amp; de Meuron. Located at the west end of Lincoln Road Mall at the junction with Alton Road, and can accommodate about 300 cars. Since it opened in 2010, it has attracted considerable interest because its unique appearance differs from the more traditional parking garage design.

In 2005, local developer Robert Wennett purchased the SunTrust Bank office structure from 1968 and the Brutalist style. This includes an adjacent surface parking lot. Intending to revitalize the west end of Lincoln Road Mall, Wennett decided not to completely eliminate the existing structure, but instead built something beside it with the same height - the parking garage.
Like Record Architecture have noted, "In the Pantheon Type Building, the parking garage is hiding somewhere around the jail and the toll plaza." The New York Times has labeled the parking garage a "gloomy European design". But Wennett was determined to do something different, and interviewed ten famous architects around the world before choosing Herzog & amp; de Meuron. Construction began in 2008 and required the closing of the west end of Lincoln Road Mall.
The resulting structure cost $ 65 million. The entire project includes the renovation of existing buildings into one used for storefronts and offices for creative companies, and construction of a new, smaller structure for SunTrust which also contains several apartments.

Designing and using
The design, led by Herzog & amp; Partner de Meuron Christine Binswanger, has been characterized as resembling a card house. It is an open structure without exterior walls built around cantilevers and cantilevers that have floor heights varying from 8 to 34 feet. Some internal ramps are steep enough to accommodate wider altitude intervals. The elevator and the winding staircase in the center take the driver to and from their car. A high-class fashion boutique, Alchemist, stands on the edge of the fifth floor. The parking garage has retail space on the street level, with tenants such as Taschen books, Osklen outfits, Nespresso coffee and MAC cosmetics and joining with other structures that are part of the project. Wennett built his own penthouse apartment as part of an 18,000 square foot (1,700 m 2 ) room on the roof of a building that also has a pond and a garden with hanging vines. Jacques Herzog of the company called the parking garage the most radical job they ever did.
Garage has become a destination for architects and photographers interested in the design. It has become well-known as a tourist attraction as well, especially after it was featured on the front page of The New York Times in January 2011. Several hundred people each day walked into the garage to look around. Runners use it for exercise. They park their cars often linger for the panoramas it provides from the South Beach area, before going on their way (though acrophobics may stay away from the edge). One loyal customer refused to park elsewhere and was quoted as saying, "This is more artwork than a garage.Whereever you look, there's a view."
The seventh floor serves as an event space. The garage has attracted requests for various types of events to be held there, including wine tasting, dinner parties, and yoga classes. This is a site for weddings, and a woman has a garage image on her invitation. It has also been the venue for celebrity-filled parties, such as the one provided by a Ferrari during Art Basel Miami Beach week (where two dozen car-makers go up and down on the ramps of the garage). At Art Basel 2011, the German carmaker BMW unveiled its i3 and i8 prototype electric car on the seventh floor of the parking lot building. A television commercial for the Lexus IS 250 was filmed there.
Reception
Since its opening, 1111 Lincoln Road has received numerous reviews. Director of the Wolfsonian Museum of Miami Beach said that the structure "sets a new bar for what parking garages can and should be." Architectural Records writes that the designers managed to connect the structure to the immediate environment, but more importantly, "helped break the mold for the low parking garage, lifted it out of its dreary limbo into light and air." The The Los Angeles Times called it "stunning", and the Associated Press wrote that it "has become a modern gateway for sightseeing kafà © on Miami Beach's Lincoln Road."
Some users objected to the high price for parking at 1111 Lincoln Road, which can be up to four times larger than in the other lot in the area. (By contrast, luxury car drivers like parking in 1111 to emphasize their status.) Others complain that the garage is not adequately protected from South Florida storms. University of Miami film professor Lisa Gottlieb said the awards for the garage reflected poorly on Miami Beach: "It says something about aesthetics here, I think this is what we bring to the table - the luxury parking garage." The phenomenon of "starchitect" has reached the Miami area, with Frank Gehry near the New World Center following in 2011 and Herzog & The new Miami Art Museum de Meuron is in the works as well. Given the success of the 1111 structure, other new parking garage owners in South Beach have tried to add design elements to their properties. In 2012, the American Institute of Architects's Florida Chapter placed 1111 Lincoln Road on its Florida Architecture: 100 Years. 100 Places .
