Histori

The educational institution that developed into Pembroke UNC has its origins in the post-Civil War South. This school is part of the Lumbee Nation effort in North Carolina to maintain their unique identity. Access and authority over their own educational system is understood as an important key to maintaining Lumbee culture, instilling pride, and improving the economic and social conditions of groups.

The Croatan Normal School was created by the General Assembly on 7 March 1887 in response to a local petition, sponsored by North Carolina Representative Hamilton McMillian of Robeson County. This event occurred in the context of competition for support between Democratic and Republican parties in North Carolina. Hamilton MacMillian's support for the school is linked to his personnel interests and research on the history and culture of Native Americans. The initial name of the school, the Croatan Normal School, was chosen according to the debatable view that this tribe was descended from the Outer Banks Lost Colony of Sir Walter Raleigh.

Opened in autumn 1887 with one teacher and 15 students. With the aim of training American Indian public school teachers. Initially registration is limited to American Indians in Robeson County. In this period of school enrollment is often very limited among the general population. Funding by the state is very inappropriate and there is a high rate of illiteracy. The establishment of a centralized training school for teachers is considered the best method to address this problem in certain situations.

In 1909, the school moved to its present location, about a mile east of the original site. The name was changed in 1911 to The Indian Normal School of Robeson County , and again in 1913 to the Cherokee Indian Normal School of Robeson County, tracking the legislative designation for the Indians of the county, who at one time claimed Cherokee descent. In 1926 the school became a secondary high school post-secondary; until then only provide primary and secondary instructions.

In 1939 it became a four-year institution, and in 1941 was named Pembroke State College for Indians . The following year, schools began offering bachelor degrees in fields other than teaching. In 1945, colleges were opened to members of all federally recognized tribes. The name change to Pembroke State College in 1949 was the beginning of the acceptance of white students, who agreed in 1953 to forty percent of the total enrollment. The Brown v. The Education Council that reigned the following year by the United States Supreme Court ended racial barriers on campus. Between 1939 and 1953, Pembroke State was the only country that supported a four-year college for Indians in the United States.

In 1969 the college became Pembroke State University , a regional university incorporated into the University of North Carolina system in 1972. The first master's degree program took place in 1978. On July 1, 1996, Pembroke State The University became University of North Carolina at Pembroke .

In recent years, university profiles have increased as a result of statewide advertising campaigns, where billboards, radio and television advertisements have been called UNCP as "where learning is private," because of the small size of the class, other factors.

On 14 March 2012, UNC Pembroke commenced the 14-month celebration of its 125th anniversary, ending the 2013 spring launch ceremony in May 2013.

Campus

The university campus is located north of Pembroke, located just behind NC Highway 711. Interstate 74 is located just minutes from the campus, like Interstate 95. The campus center is considered the Chavis University Center (often referred to as the Central University, or UC). Students can play bowls, play billiards and related games, or just hang out in the lounge. The dining room and Chick-fil-A are located at UC.

UC grass, an open grass area in front of UC, is where students play amateur sports, read on benches, or use the area for free speech. Faculty Row, a highway for university traffic, basically split the campus to the east and west. The east side of the campus includes the Livermore Library, Oxendine Science Building, Old Main, and Wellons Hall, among other buildings. The campus on the west side has a Business Administration Building, an Education Center, and most dormitory communities. Lumbee Hall, Dial Humanities buildings, Sampson buildings, Auxiliary buildings, Jones Athletic Center, and Givens Performing Arts Center are mostly the northern end of the campus.

The new campus is the Cypress Hall, the residence hall, which opened in August 2011. In addition, Weinstein Health Building Building, which houses Papa John's Pizza, the Bagel Einstein Brothers, and nursing program, opened in August 2012. The Brave Health Center opened at the end north of campus in 2017.

The Givens Performing Arts Center hosts many Broadway shows, orchestras, children-directed shows, and also hosts the "Differentiated Speaker Series," in collaboration with the College's Entertainment Association, which has brought famous people like Cory Booker, Bill Nye, Jodi Sweetin, Patch Adams, Gabby Douglas, and Hill Harper, among many others.

Sports, clubs and traditions

Athletics

The UNC Pembroke athletic team is known as the Braves. Because of its heritage as an institution established for the benefit of American Indians and the support of the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina, the school has been immune to the ongoing controversy linked to Indian nicknames and mascots.

The School is a member of the NCAA Second Division and competes in the Conference of Peach Belts, with the exception of football and wrestling, where it competes as an independent. The school has 16 university sports teams.

Greek Greek student life and organization

UNCP, as well as the Greek Office of Life and the Office of Student and Leadership Involvement, offers a variety of extracurricular activities for students. From academic-based organizations and services, to minority organizations and Greek life, UNCP offers organizations tailored to the specific needs of students.

Tradition

School Color

Since at least 1944, UNCP's official colors are black and gold, although gold has been associated with schools since the 1920s.

Braves and Red-tailed Eagles

UNC's athletic nickname Pembroke is Braves while his mascot is a red-tailed hawk. The athletic team has the nickname of Braves - a term that echoes the UNC Pembroke Indian heritage of America - since 1946. The red-tailed tail was added as a companion to Brave in 1992. It originated in North America and can be seen soaring at over or perched on the pine trees around the campus.
The American Indian tradition teaches that animals are sent by the Great Creator to serve as guardians and teachers to men; they are blessed with certain sacred qualities and powers that can be given to humans. Certain animal powers are called by adding symbols and pictures to personal clothing and items.
Braves athletic uniforms and other campus symbols adorned with a mascot to invoke the quality of red-tailed eagles - speed, sharp views, focus, strength, hunting ability, and good luck.

Opponents

The music for the song UNCP was written by Michael Raiber, Music Education Professor, The University of Oklahoma, in 2004.

Alma Mater: "Greetings to UNCP"

Music and the lyrics "Hail to UNCP" was written by faculty members Reba and Ira Pate Lowry in 1954.
