" They Do not Know " is a song, written and composed by Kirsty MacColl, who recorded it in 1979. Became popular on radio in the UK, reaching number 2 on the Air Music show chart.. However, complications involving strikes in the distributors prevented the single from being sent and promoted properly, preventing the release of singles. The MacColl version of "They Do not Know" thus failed to appear on the official UK Singles Charts, which were then wholly based on sales.

Although the song was not taken from the album, it later appeared in the MacColl Galore compilation (among others).

Composition

Speaking with NME at the time, Kirsty MacColl recalled: "When I was in R & B Drug Addix, Stiff Records paid some demos to do with the band, but they did not really like them, when they heard that I finally left (The Drug Addix) they called me and said: "We want you to come and play whatever you have." I said, "I thought you did not like the demo." And they said: "We hate the band, but we love it You. "When they asked me if I had a song, I said 'Oh yes, a lot !, although I'm not at all Then I thought,' Oh my God, I should write something before I see them. 'And that's when I wrote They Do not Know I went around with a cassette, singing to an acoustic guitar They loved it and signed me.

Tracey Ullman Version

In 1983, Tracey Ullman recorded one version of the song. Already famous in Britain as an actress and comedian, "They Do not Know" was released as her second single there, reaching number 2. MacColl backing vocals on the Ullman version and repeating the original "bay-ay-be-ee" "In the middle song, because Ullman has a very limited range of high-end.This song is also included in Ullman's debut album, You Broke My Heart at 17 Places.

The song was released in the United States the following year, as Ullman's first single there. At that time, Ullman was almost completely unknown in the US, because his TV appearance had never been seen in the country. Publicity for singles was aided by the fact that the video for "They Do not Know" featured a cameo from Paul McCartney; at the time it was filmed, Ullman was filming a small role in the McCartney Movie Give My Regards to Broad Street . "They Do not Know" eventually reached number 8 on Billboard Hot 100 and number 11 on the Adult Contemporary chart in the United States.

Sometimes it is mistakenly reported that Ullman's version of "They Do not Know" only uses the track backing of MacColl's original single. In fact, the Ullman version is a recording of all the new brands, and the two versions are noticeably different: the Ullman version, produced by Peter Collins, is in a different key, and features very little faster tempos, very different settings and very guitar solos different from those played in the MacColl version, produced by Liam Sternberg. This confusion may stem from the fact that Ullman used MacColl's pre-existing back-track when recording his own version of MacColl's "Terry" in 1984. (Both versions of "Terry" were produced jointly by MacColl.)

In 1997, "They Do not Know" became the theme song for the last three seasons of the HBO Ullman TV series Tracey Takes On.... The Ullman version is also used as the credit opening theme of our Nixon , a 2013 documentary about US President Richard Nixon.
