Plot

Roma

The film begins at an airport in Rome where Mace, on his way back to the Philippines, is desperate which personal belongings to keep him from exceeding the load requirements. As he regretted his fate and cried over his dilemma, Anthony appeared and offered to bring extra luggage for him through extra luggage money that was unused. Mace later revealed that her entire life was in her suitcase.

On the plane, Mace watched and emotionally connected with the movie protagonist "One More Opportunity" but strongly rejected the network package offered to her.

Manila

Upon arriving at NAIA, they went to a Japanese restaurant after Mace expressed his reluctance to go straight home. Anthony shared his reasons for being in Rome but found that Mace did not share his admiration. Their small talk was cut short when a fellow protector, who had nonchalantly ignored the incoming call, made Mace annoyed. Much later, Mace questioned the feasibility of leaving the future of someone's relationship with the wind of fate, or what was destined to be dictated, and declared that it was not sitting well with him because he would do something about it. He then starts talking about his recently ended relationship. A broken eight-year relationship in just seven words. They then end up in a karaoke bar where they sing "Where Do Broken Hearts Go" together. In a drunken state, Mace tells Anthony that he wants to go to Baguio City.

On the bus to Baguio, Mace linked a film that was shown to her by her ex-girlfriend. Then at a stopover, after he did the same for all that Anthony did, he made a deal with him as a way to calm himself of the habit. However, Mace can not help but ask "" - how does one forget? " and " - how long does it take to do it? Anthony points out that "- the important thing is to forget" - how and how long "- until he" .

Baguio

In Baguio, Mace makes a decision about what to do next, rejecting Anthony's offer to help and carry his own stuff - something that, though slow, can still be dealt with. At an art exhibit, Mace finds Anthony's unfulfilled passion for paintings overshadowed by life being driven by requirements and deadlines. So, during lunch, he asked Anthony to illustrate a short story he wrote in college titled "Arrow with Heart Stab Through It" . That night, Mace awakens from a dream that involves her ex-girlfriend. Anthony reveals that his dream is from the two of them who only walk on Session Road.

Inside the cafe on Session Road, Mace talked about how she waited for eight years for a question that never came. Anthony claimed to be unprepared and share the loss and pain he suffered afterwards along with all the other unanswered questions. Mace then quotes F. Scott Fitzgerald back to him.

Outside the cafe, Anthony assures him that he's not bad at all, telling him that he'll recover because it's impossible for an extraordinary love like his to be wasted or go uncontrollable and to quote Popoy's line from the movie One More Chance. He also reveals to him what he has done to forget and move away from his long-time ex-girlfriend and forget it.

Sagada

Upon arriving in Sagada, Mace realizes that their belongings have been abandoned. While Anthony is frantically trying to negotiate a way to get back, Mace tells him that baggage is no longer a problem in his life right now. As they waited for the jeepney heading to Mount Kiltepan, in the freezing cold, Anthony courageously wrapped his sweater over his shoulder and for the first time spent a few minutes together in a thoughtful silence.

They arrive at the camp late at night, lying beside the fire under the open sky and talking about what they would expect if the falling star appeared. They fall asleep, satisfied with the idea that their hope will be granted.

The next day was dawn and they ran together to a place on the edge of a mountain and a sea of clouds. There, Mace unravels everything, shouting all her anger, all her pain, and all the things she can not say to her ex-boyfriend.

Epilogue

Mace asks what they did when they reached the end of Session Road in her dream. Anthony reveals that he wakes up before he gets to that part but tells him that if he adds something into it, it will be that he turns to him slowly to say he will forget his ex girlfriend.

After a moment of silence, Mace replied and said "I'll forget about it."

On the way home Anthony walked to Mace's house when they discovered that the former Marco was at the gate waiting for Mace with a bouquet of flowers asking for another chance. Anthony and Mace were so surprised that Anthony said goodbye to give them time to talk.

On his way home, Anthony was surprised by all that had happened over the last few days. All he did was smile.

Mace short stories are played. The Arrow feels heavier than usual even after losing The Heart through it. The Arrow keeps going until he meets The Heart again.

The story continues in Anthony's place driving through Manila. She was thinking about what Mace had said about leaving your destiny to the wind. He tells himself that if you really love someone, you should look for it and not wait for the wind to blow it back to you and that you have to pull it so strong and not let it go as long as you can.

The story ends with Mace's short story featured on Anthony's lap published with a credits written "Written by Mace Castillo" "Illustrated by Anthony Lagdameo" meaning that they stay in touch and Anthony is on his way to see his girlfriend Mace.

Reception

Critical response

ClickTheCity.com's Philbert Ortiz Dy praised this movie by giving it 5 stars out of 5 ratings. He writes:

Things Called Tadhana link romance to its core. Our movie becomes very complicated. They are stories of people from different worlds, overcoming great opportunities to finally kiss each other in the end. This movie, on the other hand, only about two people spend each other's time, slowly falling in love. It is about just needing someone to be there when you can not bring yourself to finish the song you sing in karaoke. It's about feeling simple, beautiful, having someone to keep the track running.

Oggs Cruz of Rappler menulis ulasan positif:

Antoinette Jadaone's That Thing Called Tadhana enjoys the simplicity of his premise. Never get lost in unlikely situations that most dependable romantic comedy for parade. The film keeps its feet firmly in reality.

With a reassuring performance from Angelica Panganiban and JM de Guzman, the film easily evokes the pain of losing love and alluring pleasure to get it back.
