GFI Group Inc. founded by Michael Gooch in 1987. GFI is the first broker to offer an Over-the-Counter (OTC) industry option to the industry. In 2001, GFI acquired a leading FX analytical software provider FENICS Software Ltd. In 2005, GFI acquired the North American operations of Starsupply Petroleum LLC, a leading broker of oil products and derivative contracts and associated options. The company acquired Amerex Energy brokerage operations in North America in 2006, they are wholesale wholesalers of electric power, natural gas and emission products. In 2008, GFI acquired Trayport Ltd, a leading trading software provider for OTC energy products and other markets.
On September 28, 1999, GFI established a new venture to offer the online spot market for international telecommunications minutes, according to Michael Gooch, President and CEO of GFI..
In 2010, GFI Group moved its list from Nasdaq to NYSE.
In March 2015 GFI removed from the NYSE after the purchase of a 56% stake by BGC Partners in February 2015. Since the takeover, GFI operates as a BGC division.
