Histori
Pra-rilis
Bloomberg reported in January 2017 that Andy Rubin, founder of the Android operating system acquired by Google in 2005, is preparing to announce a new hardware company called Essential, whose first hardware product is "Essential" Phone.
The phone first appeared in a tweet by Rubin, posted on March 27, 2017. In a quote from the tweet, Alphabet chief executive Eric Schmidt confirmed the phone would run Android. A few days before the official announcement, Essential tweeted the image of what appeared to be a 360-degree camera attached to a smartphone. The Verge exclusively announced the device on May 30, 2017, a few hours ahead of Rubin's announcement on the technology conference.

Specifications
Hardware
The Essential Phone has a titanium and ceramic chassis, an edge-to-edge display with an unusual 19:10 aspect ratio protected with Gorilla Glass 5, Snapdragon 835 processor, 4 GB RAM, and 128 GB storage. The phone has two 13 MP cameras with f/1.85 lens, one of which functions as a monochrome sensor specifically for black and white photography. The front camera has an 8 MP sensor with f/2.2 lens. It's made available in black, gray, white and "Ocean Depths" color choices. The accompanying phone is a 360 degree camera that can be attached onto it, and a docking charger accessory is also available. It has a USB-C connector but no 3.5 mm headphone jack.
The second Click Connector device will become the dock of the charger. In January 2018, accessories with headphone jack are being developed, and more accessories to be released.
Network compatibility
The Essential Phone is compatible with the four largest wireless carriers in the United States, but the exclusive carrier partner is Sprint. In Canada, Telus is an exclusive carrier partner.
In July 2017, Essential reportedly plans to sell Imported Phones in other markets, including the UK, with possible partnerships with EE, Japan and Europe.
Software
Important phones run Android, without modification. It has an unlocked bootloader, potentially enabling significant developer communities to adapt their software further. Rubin publishes a blog post on August 16, 2017, promising two years of Android updates and three years of monthly security patches.
Special edition
In February 2018, three new colors of the phone were announced for sale on the Essential website, Ocean Depths (teal back with bronze sides), Stellar Gray, and Copper Black.
Amazon's Version of Essential Phones was also launched that month with the color "hello gray" and Alexa built-in.
Problem
Meltdown and Specter
In January 2018, mobile phones quickly received patches to fix Meltdown and Specter vulnerabilities after they were revealed. Until now, only phones by Google whose vulnerabilities were patched.
Delay availability
Rubin announced on May 30, 2017, that the Essential Phone will be shipped within approximately 30 days, June 2017. This predicted schedule is not met, however, without Essentials responding to media inquiries. In mid-July, Rubin sent an email to potential customers who said certification and operator testing was in progress, and that he expected the device to be shipped "within a few weeks". After a series of delays and no exact release date, Best Buy posted a list for Important Phones, which aired on August 17th. On August 9, 2017, Rubin announced the phone in mass production, and that the release date will be announced next week. The Essential Phone is then confirmed to start shipping in the fourth week of August, according to an email Rubin sends to customers. It started shipping in batches on August 25th.
Customer data leakage
On August 29, 2017, a report emerged that hundreds of customers who ordered Essentials started receiving e-mails from the @essential address. The e-mail contains an official-looking request for a customer's "customer ID" to "verify the information to complete the latest order processing". Essence then tweets that they know the latest e-mail received by some customers and that they are investigating them and have taken steps to reduce the problem. Rubin personally apologized and one year Lifelock was offered to affected customers; about 70 people affected. The license of some 'driver' customers is leaked by e-mail as well. Data leaked customers get the phone for free.
Touch issues
In October 2017, some handsets have a touch screen rolling "jitteriness" issue. It is important to say they are working on problems and software patches will be released.
Trade secret lawsuit
Keyssa, a pioneering company owned by Nestle founder Tony Fadell and specializing in wireless data transmission, filed a lawsuit accusing the theft of trade secrets in October 2017. Keyssa said it was in Essential talk for about 10 months to help provide the technology behind connecting Essential new Android phones and future products are planned. It is important to include Keyssa microchips- developed in the Essential Phone to provide functionality for their modular accessories, but switch to the same company, SiBeam, to produce microchips. Keyssa said Essential stole its proprietary technology because its signed non-disclosure agreement protected the two companies' meetings and prevented Essentials using the trade secrets to make commercial products.
Keyssa has not been compensated for the use of this guide and knowledge by Essential. We are pursuing this action because our efforts to resolve this issue through discussions with Essential have not been successful.
Reception
Critical reception
The Essential Phone received generally positive reviews. Much of the criticism is directed at the performance of the camera, and the removal of the headphone jack.
- Wired positively records the design, battery life, performance and stock of the Android OS, but does not like the cameras and speakers inside. They gave him a score of 8/10.
- Engadget praised its build quality, edge-to-edge display, performance, battery life and clean build of Android 7.1.1, but criticized screen brightness, and lack of headphone jacks and waterproof.
- iFixit gives mobile 1 of 10 in repair because it's almost impossible to open without freezing and ultimately damaging it.
- CNET notes that regardless of Essential's claims about device toughness, it can still suffer dents during normal use, and the screen can crack if it falls from a height.
- This Week on Tech praises design, specification, and OS, but notes cracked phone screens during normal use without being dropped, and criticizes the camera's performance and camera accessories.
Sales
In its first month of launch, Essential Phone shipments were very low, with sales of around 5,000 units estimated to be sold through Sprint. Due to low demand, Essential reduces the price of the phone from the beginning of US $ 699 to a more "reasonable" US $ 499. Customers who buy the phone at the original price can claim a US $ 200 "friend and family" code that can be used to purchase a 360 degree camera module or other Important Phones.
They claimed a six figure sales figure, estimated at around 150,000 phones.
Successor
According to designers at Essential, PH-2 is under construction. His successor has since been rumored to be canceled.
