Histori

C & amp; S was founded by Israel Cohen and Abraham Siegel in 1918 in Worcester, Massachusetts. It started as a small grocery distribution center in a three-story building on Winter Street. In 1929 the original building flooded, prompting a move to a new, larger location on Hygeia Road. In the 1940s, when the popularity of supermarkets expanded, C & S made several improvements to their distribution process including a "warehouse roller system", and a staff truck with one employee acting as driver and seller, thus cutting shipping costs halfway.

C & amp; S grew dramatically in 1958 after starting to serve the Big D supermarket chain in Worcester.

In the 1970s, the founder's grandson, Rick Cohen, joined the company. C & amp; S was then built and moved to a 300,000 square foot (28,000 m 2 warehouse) in Brattleboro, Vermont. By moving, he began serving several major supermarket chains, including A & P; P.

In 1987, Rick Cohen has been president and CEO of C & amp; S and worry if the company will be able to withstand the upcoming holiday season; will operate to meet the needs of all customers and at the same time maintain a high level of customer satisfaction that they are known throughout New England. Some of the challenges that come with acquiring stores, such as A & P; including higher operating costs, shrinking margins, customer relationship management, and quality control. In 1988, Rick Cohen faced this challenge by applying a self-managed team concept.

Starting in 2013, C & amp; S has partnered with BI-LO to provide warehousing, distribution and procurement services for all 480 Winn-Dixie stores. As a result, C & amp; S began operating six Winn-Dixie distribution centers in the Southeastern United States. In September 2014, C & amp; S signed an asset purchase agreement with Associated Wholesalers Inc. (AWI), allowing C & S acquired almost all of its assets.

These eight locations in the Knoxville, Tennessee market are sold to the K-Va-T Food Store before switching to the Southern Family name. In addition, the Southern Family acquired 7 stores from Winn-Dixie that same year.

Under increasingly fierce competition, Southern Family Markets announced in August 2006 that it would close or sell 30 stores in Alabama, Georgia, and Mississippi along with their complete North Carolina market from 17 stores. In 2007 and 2008, C & amp; S began to change six stores in Georgia and ten in Alabama to Piggly Wiggly's banner.

In April 2009, as part of the Bruno Supermarket bankruptcy process, the Southern Family agreed to buy 31 Bruno locations in a $ 45.8 million deal. In October 2010, Southern Family Markets announced the closing of eleven stores acquired during Bruno's bankruptcy.

Litigation

  • January 2009: Lawsuits filed in federal court in Wisconsin and New Hampshire allege that C & S and SuperValu are involved in collusion to allocate markets and reduce competition. The allegations stem from the 2003 asset exchange in which SuperValu exchanges distribution centers in the Northeast with C & amp; S in the Midwest with a lawsuit that claims that each has indicated that they will not compete in other territories. The agreement raised a red flag when C & amp; S closed down its newly acquired distribution center shortly after the deal.
  • December 2010: A & amp; P filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, citing in court documents that, among other reasons, A & amp; P makes the setting "unprofitable" with C & amp; S where A & amp; P is required to get 70 percent of inventory from C & amp; S.
