Broken Lizard is an American comedy group consisting of Jay Chandrasekhar, Kevin Heffernan, Steve Lemme, Paul Soter, and Erik Stolhanske. They collaborated on the screen-writing, acting, and production of their films, with Chandrasekhar and Heffernan becoming chief directors; But the team has no single leader and they work collaboratively when selecting material and writing projects.

Histori

The group was formed at Colgate University in 1990 when Jay Chandrasekhar was asked by the student theater director to collect comedy shows. Chandrasekhar approved and composed a sketch comedy group that included Kevin Heffernan, Steve Lemme, Paul Soter, and Erik Stolhanske, all members of Theta Pi Beta Brotherhood. The team performed a combination of live stage sketches and short videos under the name "Charred Goosebeak". Charred Goosebeak continues to exist in Colgate to this day.

After graduation, the members reunited in New York City and spent the next few years performing at various clubs, especially Greenwich Village mainstay The Duplex, under the name "Broken Lizard". The group offers a variety of explanations about the origin of this moniker for years, ranging from euphemisms to loss of virility, to tribute to pet allergic Chandrasekhar. Recently, the members admitted that Chandrasekhar just made the name "off the top of his head" when he printed their first flyer. Another name that may be discarded is "Chocolate Speedo".

Broken Lizard spent the next few years performing at clubs and colleges. Membership is shrinking to five players today. In the mid-90s, group interest shifted away from living material as they became more interested in the content that was filmed. They write and act on Dante's Levels of Hell, a series of interstitial shorts for Comedy Central "Is This On?" features.

At this time, the members of Broken Lizard also made their first foray into a lengthy film, firing a 30 minute 16 mm project, The Tinfoil Monkey Agenda, an absurdity media spoof that took them on a trip to Ft. The Hollywood Film Festival, and it is incorporated into the group's mind that they must create long films.

The group collects manuscripts for their next feature, and the first width movie Super Troopers . The film, which depicts street patrolmen as ordinary people who are desperate to make their work entertaining, was shot in 2000, and also invited to Sundance, where screenings of lousy films get a distribution deal from Fox Searchlight Pictures, a unit of 20th Century Fox. The film was released in February 2002 and enjoyed only moderate theatrical success, but eventually developed into sect followers.

Fox Searchlight is sponsored and distributed next feature group, 2004 Club Dread , a parody of the sword movie that takes place in a beautiful tropical resort.

After Chandrasekhar directed The Dukes of Hazzard to Warner Bros., Broken Lizard was offered a deal with the studio. This relationship resulted in Broken Lizard's third feature, 2006's Beerfest, about two brothers who found the Olympics drinking underground Oktoberfest beers and gathering teams to compete.

At the end of May 2010, Broken Lizard has completed their fourth feature, The Slammin 'Salmon , about a group of waiters who were terrorized during a busy night by their unstable boss (Michael Clarke Duncan). Heffernan directed The Slammin 'Salmon .

At the end of March 2015, Broken Lizard has launched a crowdfunding campaign to fund Super Troopers 2 . Although rumored at one point to be a prequel set in 1970 and following the father of the main character in the original film, Heffernan has declared that the film will be a "pure sequel". The group has co-authored several script texts. February 2012, Heffernan told the crowds in Kansas City, Kansas that, "Let's Hell or our high water make Super Troopers 2 by the end of this year". In August 2012, Jayair Jark, Jay Chandrasekhar and Kevin Heffernan were interviewed by Jeff Bakalar of The 404. Jay and Kevin have confirmed that "Super Troopers 2" will be a sequel. They also confirmed that the script has been completed. All they wait for is the studio for everything okay. In an interview with Kevin Heffernan and Steve Lemme on Funemployment Radio, the duo confirmed that Super Troopers 2 was being created. They state the premise of prequel is a joke, but the actual storyline will take place a few years after the last movie. They also affirm that the Potfest text has been approved. On the episode of Funemployment Radio May 26, 2016, Jay Chandrasekhar confirmed that a small test segment of the film has been taken and full production will begin in August 2016. On August 2, 2017, Broken Lizard announced, through their website, that they have a post-production finish on film. Super Troopers 2 was released on April 20, 2018.

Unrealized projects

  • Jay Chandrasekhar and Julia Dray are also planning to develop a comedy called Taildraggers, written by Will Gluck. The film is meant to be about twenty-two pilots working for rinky-dink airlines in Alaska. The plot kicked teeth when people found rival airlines sucking oil from a nature reserve. It is planned to be the first wide comedy produced by Participant Productions, a company better known for making ecologically and ecologically conscious films, such as Unpleasant Truth, Syriana > Fast Food Nation, and North Country.
  • Marcus Raboy has signed to direct the Tow Truck comedy joint venture between Broken Lizard and Our Stories Films. The film is planned to be about two siblings who revive the crane-dying truck business to earn enough money to save their environment from commercial development. The film began filming in late spring 2008.
  • West Whisker Rider, spoof starring Willie Nelson and Johnny Knoxville.
  • Ambulance Hunter, a comedy meant to tell the story of some aggressive personal-aggression lawyers who are fighting over new clients. (In late May 2010, Broken Lizard confirmed that they were working on Ambulance Chaser on the official website of their entourage.)
  • Take My Wife, a comedy directed by Chandrasekhar, is meant to revolve around an ordinary man who jokes with wife Hollywood stars.
  • Greek Road/Rogue Scholars is a set of R-rated comedy in Ancient Greece. The film will follow Heffernan as a young Plato who is a wrestling student at the University of Athens. Plato planned to wrestle for university at the Olympics, but he failed in the Basic Thought class; so the university hired Socrates, a senior who played by Lemme, to teach Plato. Plato eventually cheated and passed the class, and both went to Mt. Olympus together. On the road, Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades (played by three other members) bet whether or not Plato and Socrates will make it and start blocking their path.
  • Nutcracker is to center on the most disgusting and dirtiest linebacker in the NFL who, as he begins to lose his skills, reluctantly switches to ballet to regain his game.
  • Pot Fest. The movie is called a sequel at the end of Beerfest . As a guest at The Bob and Tom Show in September 2009, Broken Lizard members mentioned that they are in the process of writing a movie, Pot Quest , for Universal. In August 2012, Jayair Jark Lizard and Kevin Heffernan were interviewed by Jeff Bakalar of The 404. Jay and Kevin have confirmed that the Pot Potions will be imminent.
  • In 2014, Chandrasekhar is bound to direct a movie starring Cheech and Chong. Since the project was announced, however, nothing has happened.
