AltGr (also Alt Graph , or Alt Right ) is a modifier key found on some computer keyboards and is mainly used for typing unusual characters for the location of the keyboard layout, such as currency symbols and accented letters. On an ordinary IBM-compatible PC keyboard, the AltGr key, currently, replaces the right Alt key. In macOS, the Option key has a function similar to the AltGr key.

The meaning of key abbreviations is not explicitly given in many technical reference manuals compatible with IBM PCs. However, IBM states that AltGr stands for alternate graphic , and the Sun keyboard labeled the key as Alt Graph .
AltGr was originally introduced as a means to generate box-image characters, also known as pseudographics, in a text user interface. This character, however, is less useful in the graphical user interface, and than the alternative graphics the key is currently used to generate alternative graphics .

Alt control as a substitute
Initially, the US PC keyboard (in particular, the 101 US key PC/AT keyboard) does not have an AltGr key because it's only relevant for non-US markets; they only have the Alt key "left" and "right".
The right Alt key is usually equivalent to the AltGr key because both the right Alt key and AltGr share share the same scancode and can not be distinguished by the software. However, on some keyboards it may not be so, ie the keyboard has two Alt keys, each of which functions as the left Alt key. On a compact keyboard like a netbook, the right Alt key may disappear altogether. To allow AltGr specific functionality when typing non-English text on the keyboard, Windows allows it to be emulated by pressing the Alt key along with the Control key:
- Ctrl Alt ? AltGr
Therefore, it is recommended that this combination not be used as a modifier on the Windows keyboard shortcut because, depending on the keyboard layout and configuration, someone who tries to type special characters with it can accidentally trigger a shortcut, or the keystrokes for shortcuts may be accidental interpreted as a user who tries to include special characters.

US-International
In US-International keyboard layout, AltGr key can be used to enter the following characters:
Ã,áÃ,ò Ã,óÃ,ä EUR Ã,ü ý þ '' Ã, à ¥ ÃÆ'â ⬠" à ÃÆ'ä ÃÆ' à ¥ ÃÆ' à © Ã, î ÃÆ' ÃÆ' ÃÆ' ÃÆ' ÃÆ' ÃÆ' ÃÆ' ÃÆ' ÃÆ' ÃÆ' ÃÆ' ÃÆ' ÃÆ' à «Ã,û à à ÃÆ'á ÃÆ'à ¸ ÃÆ' à ° ÃÆ'ø Ã,öÃ'Ã'¬¬ à à à ÃÆ'Ã| Ã, à © ÃÆ' à ± Ã,Ãμ ÃÆ'ç Ã,ÿ

Note that many of these symbols can also be inserted using the die button; for example ÃÆ'ä can be entered with " followed by a .
For comparison, the following AS-International keyboard layout follows. Note that the key "`/~ "(left number 1) has been deleted; does not generate any characters along with the AltGr key with or without Shift.

Here, "m" shows the "Macro" key. This generally results in "\"; though, the application receives a different lock code and can therefore use a key to, for example, run a macro.
English and Irish
In the English and Irish keyboard layouts, only two symbols printed on most keyboards that require the AltGr key are:
- EUR currency symbol of Euro. Located at the "4/$" button.
- Either | , vertical bars ("pipe symbol") or Ã,Ã| , broken vertical bars ("pipe symbols broken"). Located in the "`/ì "key, to the front left" 1 ". Another bar symbol is a shifted symbol on the "\" immediately to the left of the Z key.
The last two symbols swap places on the English keyboard according to the operating system used. In OS/2, "English keyboard layout" (specifically: UK166 layout) requires AltGr for vertical bars and broken vertical bars are shifted keys - matching the actual symbols printed on most UK keyboards; in Windows, "English keyboard layout" requires AltGr for the broken vertical bar and the vertical bar is the shift key - the opposite of what is normally printed on the button; and in Linux, "UK keyboard layout" produces an uninterrupted vertical bar with AltGr plus "`/ì "and shifts \, and produces a broken vertical bar with AltGr plus shifts \.
Using the AltGr key in Linux generates lots of foreign characters and international symbols, e.g. Ã,ùÃ,òÃ,óEURÃ,ý {[]} @? EÃ,ö? <-? -> ÃÆ'øÃÆ'þÃÆ'Ã|ÃÆ'à ¸ÃÆ' à ° ??? j ?? Ã, à «Ã,û Ã, à ¢ "" nÃ,Ãμ ?? EÃ? î? Ã, à ¥ ?? ÃÆ'ÃÅ"ÃÆ'à ¾ÃÆ' â ⬠çÃÆ' Ã,ê ?? J & amp ;? & Lt; & gt; Ã, à © '' NÃ,úÃÆ' â ⬠"ÃÆ' à · Ã, à ·
Using the AltGr key on the English and Irish keyboard in some versions of Windows (eg XP) in combination with vowel characters produces acute accents also known as "fadas" in Irish above vowels (eg, ÃÆ'á, ÃÆ' à ©, Ã, , ÃÆ'ó, ÃÆ'ú and ÃÆ', ÃÆ'â ⬠°, ÃÆ', ÃÆ' â ⬠Å", ÃÆ'à ¡ ).
The UK-Extended keyboard is available in Microsoft Windows versions of XP with SP2, and Linux allows many characters with diacritical marks, including accents, generated using the AltGr key in combination with others. Details can be found in QWERTY Ã,ç United Kingdom (Extended) Layout.
Latin Slavik South
On the South Slavic Latin keyboard (used in Croatia, Slovenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro and Serbia), the following letters and special characters are created using AltGr:
