Released as the second single from West's second album, Late Registration 2005 (2005), "Gold Digger" reached number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 on September 6, 2005, becoming number one and number two West's and Foxx. Produced in conjunction with Jon Brion, the song contains Ray Charles' sample "I Got a Woman".
The single broke the record for most digital downloads in a week, sold over 80,000, and was also the fastest-selling digital download of all time; both records have been corrupted. This is the second longest running number in 2005 on Hot Billboard Hot 100 behind "We Belong Together" by Mariah Carey and is the sixth longest composite ever in ten weeks.

Once released, many suspect that West contains "Gold Digger" after watching Oscar-winning portrayals by Jamie Foxx from Ray Charles in the biopic Ray. However, he actually built the beat of the song long before the film was developed. West originally produced and recorded the "Gold Digger" at Ludacris's home in Atlanta for Shawnna's debut album in 2004 Worth Tha Weight and had written chorus from the woman's first point of view: "I did not say I'm a digger gold, but I'm not playing games without a damaged niggas. "However, for unknown reasons, Shawnna continues to use the song. Not wanting to be left in vain, West decided to keep his rhythm and add the lyrics expressed from a male point of view.
The second verse "Gold Digger" was the first to be written, because the West often persuaded poetry in early 2004 when the tour promoted his debut album, The College Dropout. The first verse was made at the end of the year while West was on the Usher's Evolution Tour. Lastly, the original third verse is taken from an unreleased song called "Drop Dead Gorgeous," which is produced and captured by the West for Murphy Lee of St. Lunatics. About a year later, just before the "Gold Digger" was set to be released as a single, the West decided to write a different third verse and within a week the new song was recorded and mastered at Sony Music Studios in New York City.
The idea of ââusing Jamie Foxx specifically to sing Ray Charles's "I Got a Woman" interpolation as a substitute for his initial sample turned out to be from West seeing Ray with his friend John Mayer. Foxx vocals were recorded during many shoots; in one version he sang from start to finish, but the song was recalled because his performance was not in accordance with the instrument's instrumentation. After recording another version, Foxx decided to re-record once again because he felt it contained too many explicit lyrics. Once the track was finally in place, it was plated with additional instruments provided by American film composer Jon Belson and individually chosen by the West. At the end of their first joint studio session, the couple has completed the basic track for the final version of "Gold Diggers". Despite being the lead singer, the Foxx section only appears on the intro and the rest of the song uses Western vocals and Charles samples.

Music and lyrics
"Gold Digger" contains samples (as well as interpolations during introductions) "I Got a Woman" by Ray Charles, and a soaring tap formed from handclaps and scratches by DJ A-Trak. Toward the end, the song uses a 1970s synthesizer that emits a horn sound on Kanye's voice. The West gives a tongue-in-cheek narrative in the "Gold Digger" in which he critically portrays the life of the plagues of a man married to a woman who manipulates him for financial gain. However, another story appears in the third verse, depicting a poor black man who made a lot of money and decided to leave a loyal and unselfish boyfriend to a white girl.
In 2013 it was reported that Trena Steward and Lorenzo Pryor, two children of the late musician David Pryor have filed a lawsuit against the West for allegedly taking samples of "down girls, go 'heads, down" from single 1974 unknown to their father "Bumpin' Bus stops ".
Music video
The music video of the song was directed by Hype Williams, who also directed the previous Western video, "Diamonds from Sierra Leone". Captured in widescreen letterbox format, using stylish artwork with multiple props, this video features photographs of Western performances interspersed with trailers of Williams's trademark female video model portrayed as a "pin-up" cover model of a fictional vintage magazine. The titles of the magazines covering the women appear to reflect the correlated verses in the song. Foxx is also present, lip-synching both his own parts and Ray Charles vocal samples. John Legend made a brief cameo. "Gold Digger" won the BET Award for Video of the Year at the BET Awards 2006 and received a nomination for Best Male Video and Best Hip Hop Video, at the 2006 MTV Video Music Awards but did not win any of these awards.
Performance chart
Following the performance of the "Diamonds from Sierra Leone" chart, which failed to solve the Top 40 of Billboard Hot 100, the West label became concerned with how a single follow-up would perform. Their worries are unfounded as "Gold Digger" becomes a success, reaching number one on Billboard Hot 100, Pop 100, Hot R & amp; B/Hip-Hop Singles & amp; Hot Rap Tracks tracks and charts.
When Late Registration was released, the first "Gold Digger" album version was available for download. About 80,000 digital downloads of "Gold Digger" were sold through legal music services such as iTunes and Napster in the first week, making it the most successful digital sales debut ever. The song broke the record for most digital downloads sold in a week, and a record for the fastest digital sales of all time, both previously held by Gwen Stefani, "Hollaback Girl". "Gold Digger" sold over 1,000,000 downloads during its seven week release. This makes "Gold Digger" one of the first songs in history that sells over 1,000,000 downloads in the United States. "Gold Digger" is certified as 5 times platinum on April 10, 2014.
Sales of high digital downloads helped push the song from number 19 to number one in a week, the fifth highest jump ever on the Hot 100. The jump ended 14 weeks (and 10 weeks in a row) ran away from Mariah Carey "We Belong To" at number one, and continued Carey "Shake It Off" from replacing "We Belong Together" as the number one single. The song spent 10 weeks on Hot 100 tops to pop star Chris Brown's hit "Run It!" dashed into pole position for the week of November 19th.
"Gold Digger" also became the first top 10 single on the Topstream Top 40 chart, peaking at number two. On Pop 100, "Gold Digger" also broke the record by jumping from number 94 to number two, giving West a record for the biggest jump ever on the chart.
In MAX's top 1000 music tracks of all time, 'Gold Digger' is number 462 in the list.
By reaching number one, "Gold Digger" gave Charles Hot 100 the first chart-topper as a songwriter, credited as a result of the "I Got a Woman" sample. As an artist, Charles occupied Hot 100 three times in the 1960s, but always with other writers' songs.
As of May 2011, the song has sold 3,083,000 copies in the US. On April 10, 2014, "Gold Digger" was certified as 5 times platinum.
