Plot
In 1951, Eilis Lacey was a young woman from Enniscorthy, County Wexford, a small town in southeastern Ireland, where she lives with her mother and sister, Rose. She could not find a job, other than working the weekend in a shop run by Miss Kelly, nicknamed "Nettles Kelly", and was not interested in the local youth. Her sister wrote to an Irish priest (Father Flood) in Brooklyn who arranged for her to go to the United States to find a better future. He left but suffered seasickness on the trip and was finally locked in the toilet by his neighbor's hut. The woman in the bed underneath, an experienced traveler, helped her, gave her advice and support.
Eilis lives in a Brooklyn boardinghouse where she eats every night with homeowners and co-inhabitants, all young women. He has a job in department stores but is embarrassed and silent when interacting with customers, collecting some criticism from Miss Fortini, his boss. His letters from his sister made him miss. He was visited by the Flood Father, and he tried to help by enrolling him in the bookkeeping class. In a dance he meets Tony Fiorello, who becomes his girlfriend. He started to feel more comfortable in New York, and he and Tony became more romantically involved.
The Flood Father informs Eilis that Rose has died abruptly due to an undisclosed illness. After a trans-Atlantic phone call reveals his mother is struggling to cope, Eilis returns home to visit. Tony insisted that they should get married first without telling family or friends. In Ireland, everyone seems to conspire to keep Eilis away. Her best friend gets married a week after her return trip, and her mother has accepted an invitation on her behalf. He filled out part-time at his older brother's bookkeeping job, which led to the possibility of full-time employment. She went on a date with a decent and single bachelor. Eilis began to feel that she now had a future in Ireland that did not exist when she left and stopped opening the letter she received from Tony.
Miss Kelly, her former employer, met with Eilis and told her that she had learned about Eilis's marriage in New York. Restless, Eilis is reminded of life as in a small town. She told her mother about her marriage and that she was leaving for Brooklyn the next day. At the intersection, he offers guidance to a young woman traveling her first trip to Brooklyn. The film ends with Eilis and Tony reunited and happily embraces.
